Microsoft ActiveSync FAQs

What is ActiveSync?
ActiveSync is a component of Microsoft Exchange that allows your ActiveSync compatible mobile device to stay synchronized in real time with the information on the Exchange server. That means that your contacts, calendar, tasks, and emails are always up to date.
What is needed for ActiveSync to work?
There are four critical components needed for ActiveSync to work. If any of these parts are removed or altered ActiveSync service will not work. Here is the list:
- An ActiveSync compatible device that you own. Typically this is a Windows Mobile device.
- A wireless data plan with your cellular provider.
- An Exchange server with ActiveSync (provided by The Message Center)
- A domain name (i.e. yourdomain.com). You can purchase one at godaddy.com.
Can I have ActiveSync without hosting my email with The Message Center?
ActiveSync needs to be synchronized with an Exchange server mailbox at The Message Center. By itself, ActiveSync will not work as it will not have anything to synchronize with.
What if we already have an Exchange server?
Unfortunately the ActiveSync service will only work with Exchange mailboxes hosted by The Message Center.
Is my phone compatible with ActiveSync?
You will need to have a mobile device that is ActiveSync capable. Generally, mobile devices using Windows Mobile Operating System are able to use the ActiveSync service seamlessly. Other mobile devices use ActiveSync (such as the iPhone, Palm, etc) and there may be varying results...but most ActiveSync compatible devices will make it clear they are able to use ActiveSync.
Is a wireless data plan needed?
The rule of thumb is: if you are able to open a web browser on your mobile device and go to yahoo.com, you should be able to use the ActiveSync service. Unfortunately each wireless provider has different data plans that restrict certain types of data. Please consult your wireless carrier to validate that ActiveSync will work with your existing data plan.
Can I synchronize other folders in addition to the Inbox?
After you synchronize your Inbox for the first time, you can select other folders in your mailbox for synchronization. You can configure synchronization of your Inbox and other folders by using Exchange ActiveSync on your desktop or mobile device.
Is ActiveSync able to check other email addresses that I have?
ActiveSync is only able to synchronize with one mailbox on the Exchange server. If you have other email addresses that your email client (i.e. Outlook) is pulling/POPing, the email will be pushed to your ActiveSync device. When you reply from your mobile device the 'reply from' address will be your primary alias that is hosted on The Message Center Exchange server.
How do I set up ActiveSync on my mobile device?
Setting up ActiveSync service is very simple. Simply enter your email address, password, and server name in your mobile device...and it should start synching! That's it!
Can I have more than one mobile device with ActiveSync?
Yes! You can use as many ActiveSync connections as you would like!
